Hi polers, I'm sure you all know me as your Show Coordinator but I also have an extra role as the Pole Fitness representative for UCLU Pride in Sport and I'm here to tell you about Pride in Sport Week which starts on Monday! What is Pride in Sport? UCLU Pride in Sport is a campaign which aims to make sports clubs and societies at UCL more accessible to the LGBT+ community. Pole, like all the other sports teams have signed the official UCLU Pride in Sport Pledge which shows that we are committed to creating an environment where anyone of any sexual orientation or gender can feel 100% welcome and valued. It also means that we won't tolerate any discrimination or bullying due to someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. As the representative for the society, I am happy to speak to you if you have an LGBT+ related issue. Before I started at UCL, I felt really discouraged from taking part in any sport because I felt that I wasn't welcome and that I would be judged and sidelined for who I am. I'm not the only one, loads of other members of the LGBT+ community like me actively choose not to take part in sport because they are worried that they will not be welcome. It's such a shame that people feel like this because they are missing out on so many benefits for their health and social life. The things that makes a good sportsperson are their drive, teamwork skills and determination, and someone's sexual orientation or gender identity shouldn't matter. Campaigns like the one at UCLU are vital because they can empower people and create a sense of belonging and feeling welcome. Even though I never would have time because I love pole so much, I know that if I wanted to try any other sport at UCL, be it Boxing, Football or Lacrosse, I know that I would be coming into a welcoming and accepting space. What's happening at UCL? On Wednesday, all the sports teams at UCL that can will be wearing rainbow laces at their various matches on to show their solidarity with the LGBT+ community. We will be having a special pride theme to our classes taking place on Wednesday so make sure to dress up with as much colour as you can! I've compiled a special playlist that Ayesha and Lauren will be playing. We will also be having a collection bucket for the charity Stonewall at class so make sure you have some spare change to donate. We're also having a pride social where we'll be heading to Phineas and then Loop! This week's Loop is pride themed and so we want you to go all out and cover yourselves in rainbows and glitter. The best dressed society will win a bar tab so go all out!!! I am so excited for next week and hope you all are too. Remember that at pole we want you to be nothing else than who you truly are, we love you and respect you for it. Our class level system has changed from Term 2 so here's an updated level guide: Beginner - Entry level, no prior experience required. To advance to the beginner foundation, basic spins and holds should be achieved (discretion of the instructor). Beginner Foundation - (returning beginners) must be able to do basic spins (front/back hook, chair) , basic pole climbs, sitting on pole Most difficult move: basic invert. Elementary - covers, amongst other moves: all standard grip spins, spinning climbs to top of pole, one-handed spins, inverted crucifix snake dismount. Most difficult move/need to master for next level: invert on both sides. Intermediate - covers double spinning climb both sides, side climb, angel knee climb, hang backs into handstand, angel switches. Inverts should be executed with complete ease at this stage, instructor will inform if you are suitable for upper intermediate level. Upper intermediate - Most difficult move/need to master for next level: Aerial V inverts with straight legs, extended butterfly, basic shoulder mount. Advanced - Covers, amongst other moves: extended butterfly combo, flatliner, allegra, brass monkey, deadlift shoulder-mount from floor, cupid (no hands). We are just about to kick off our year with our performance at UCL Freshers Fair 2016 tomorrow!Expect to see crazy pole tricks across all levels during our weekend performances in the Main UCL Quad: Saturday 2pm, Sunday 1pm! A show not to be missed!
We will also be tending to all your burning questions at our freshers' fair stall, where our committee members will guide you through everything you can expect if you decide to pole with us this year... Starting of course with our TASTER CLASSES! This year, UCLU Pole Fitness Society will be hosting taster classes on Wednesday 5th October, at Lewis Building Dance Studio (all on UCL Campus); Starting on the hour and every half hour from 1pm-7pm. We will be teaching a medley of beginner tricks and holds. We will end our day of beginners taster with a HUGE SOCIAL, games and FREE PIZZA before a wild night out at Loop Bar for Sports Night! Note- this taster class is only for complete beginners (we class complete beginners as those who have had less than two pole fitness classes in their lives!). Taster class info is found below and on the home screen. However, if you have poled before, we are also offering a Friday practice session, at the same location from 2-4pm on Friday 7th October!
